“Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes. I’ll never love blue eyes again.” These old song lyrics might easily have been composed to describe the lovely and sultry American Idol runner-up from 2006, Katharine McPhee. Katharine, who has been singing and performing since the age of two, auditioned for American Idol’s fifth season in San Francisco. She performed the Billie Holiday classic, “God Bless the Child” to raves from the judges. During the course of the competition, she also performed “Somewhere over the Rainbow” and “My Destiny”. These two songs were later combined on a CD single that had a 36 week run in the Top 25 Hot Singles list. Katherine was an extremely popular contestant and an instant celebrity. She was even rumored to be quitting the show during the third week due to pregnancy. She denied the accusation at a later show claiming it got started from a “poor clothing choice.” She made her way into the final rounds with her performance of KT Tunstall’s “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.” The first time she performed it, she was barefoot and on her knees for the entire song. This dramatic performance not only propelled her into the finals, but earned a legion of devoted fans.

Katharine abandoned the barefoot and on her knees approach when she performed the song again for the finals. It a dramatic climax to the competition, she lost to Taylor Hicks. This result shocked and even outraged her legion of devoted fans. The defeat in the finals did not slow down the young singer. It was a springboard to success. She signed a recording contract with RCA records. The dual single of “Somewhere over the Rainbow/My Destiny” was released and actually outperformed the single of “Do I Make You Proud” by winner Taylor Hicks. Katharine has been busy since the end of the competition taking full advantage of her well deserved fame and using her many talents. She has started off 2007 with a bang. Her self-titled debut album sold 116,000 copies in its first week. Her first single, “Over It” debuted on the Billboard Hit 100 list at #48 and had moved up to #23 by March 23rd. Katharine McPhee is a winner despite the American Idol result and it is certain that she will not be remembered as a runner-up for very long. With her talent and her “knock them dead” good looks, she is a true American Idol.
