Katharine abandoned the barefoot and on her knees approach when she performed the song again for the finals. It a dramatic climax to the competition, she lost to Taylor Hicks. This result shocked and even outraged her legion of devoted fans. The defeat in the finals did not slow down the young singer. It was a springboard to success. She signed a recording contract with RCA records. The dual single of “Somewhere over the Rainbow/My Destiny” was released and actually outperformed the single of “Do I Make You Proud” by winner Taylor Hicks. Katharine has been busy since the end of the competition taking full advantage of her well deserved fame and using her many talents.
She has started off 2007 with a bang. Her self-titled debut album sold 116,000 copies in its first week. Her first single, “Over It” debuted on the Billboard Hit 100 list at #48 and had moved up to #23 by March 23rd. Katharine McPhee is a winner despite the American Idol result and it is certain that she will not be remembered as a runner-up for very long.
