American Idol: The Start of McPheever

On June 6, 2006, Katharine McPhee signed with American Idol creator Simon Fuller’s 19 Recordings Limited and Sony BMG’s RCA Records. Her debut single was a dual CD of two of her songs from the competition. The single of “Somewhere over the Rainbow/My Destiny” spent 32 weeks working its way up to the #4 spot on the Billboard Single Sales Chart. “Somewhere over the Rainbow” peaked at #12 and “My Destiny” at #60 on the Billboard Top 100. In addition to her recording activities, McPhee was touring and preparing to co-produce a play. She still retains her interest in theater. She also appeared on the debut “Dr. Keith Ablow Show” talking about several very personal issues including bulimia and a childhood reading problem. She told how she was concerned that she had a learning type disability while in Middle School, but later discovered it was really a vision problem. As successful as 2006 was for the young and talented lady, McPheever, a phrase coined to describe the state of her excited fans, was getting ready to really take off in the New Year. She would lose no time. On January 1, 2007, she was performing at the Tournament of Roses Parade.

Katharine McPhee quickly followed her New Year Day singing gig by signing to appear as herself in an episode of the hit TV show, “Ugly Betty.” She also had a cameo appearance on the popular Internet sensation, “lonelygirl15.” Meanwhile, she was putting the final touches on her first album. Her debut album was released on January 30, 2007. It was named simply, “Katharine McPhee”, but this was all the name it needed. The much anticipated CD sold more than 116,000 copies in the first week after its release. To date, it has sold almost a quarter of a million copies. The first official single release from the album is “Over It.” The single was still moving up the charts in March of 2007 as the sultry singer was heading for her 23rd birthday. “Over it” was also McPhee’s first music video. Katharine Hope McPhee has it all. She did not win the competition that vaulted her into celebrity status, but there is no doubt that she is well on her way to becoming a true American Idol. She may be the start of a new inspirational cliché. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, what really counts is how you sing that song!
